Math
Big Ideas: Multiplication (Models and Standard Algorithm for large numbers), Division (Models to solve for large numbers), Fractions (draw, add, subtract, multiply, and compare), and MEMORIZATION OF MATH FACTS (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Reading
Big goals: Read a variety of genres, finish a chapter book each week, compare characters/themes/plots in two or more texts
Writing
An accomplished grade 4 author will feel comfortable: 1.) writing in the three different modes of writing (narrative, informative, opinion) 2.) reviewing their work for proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar 3.) publishing their work via typing, written essay, brochure/poster, or slideshow
Spelling
We use SpellingCity.com for spelling practice. Each student knows their username and password. Each week there is a new list of words. Students can play the games in class or at home. Tests are on Fridays.
Social-Emotional Learning
Students complete 22 lessons in the Second Steps curriculum which discusses empathy, managing strong emotions, and problem solving. Class meetings/circles are held, when needed, to discuss class/recess issues and promote communication for positive problem solving between peers and adults.
Science
Content: “How Earth’s Surface Changes”, “Circuits”, “Salmon of the Pacific Northwest”, “Extreme Weather”, “Human Body”, & “Sound Waves”
Social Studies
In 4th grade, we learn all about the state we live in….. OREGON! The geography, native tribes, and government.
Health
Main topics: human growth and development, building healthy relationships, nutrition and physical fitness
Homework
Homework is given Mon, Tues, and Wed afternoons. Students are to return their homework journals the following morning for check-off. Homework answers do not need to be correct, but each problem should show EFFORT to be given credit. Each homework assignment is corrected at the end of the school day in class. Students may ask questions and get clarification on difficult problems during that time.
Free Time
Every FRIDAY- students are awarded FREE TIME if they have completed all their classwork. Students may choose to draw, read, play cards, puzzles, or go on teacher approved educational websites.
